After a rough month of floods and the
damage that goes along with them, Nashville
was hanging tough this past weekend as the
Goodguys Rod & Custom association
returned to LP Field with the Nashville
Nationals. If you were there then you know
how hip it was, but if you weren't, then
you just don't know what you missed.
Nashville is lucky enough to have a
Goodguys event on their annual gearhead
calendar, and the 2010 edition was the
fifth time that the California based
organization has brought their show to LP
Field. Righteous Chevrolets were everywhere
you looked, but the event is open to
anything on wheels manufactured thru model
year 1972. Net result is a wonderful
diversity of Street Rods, Customs, Muscle
Cars, and Classics for the eyes to behold.
Of extra special importance this year was
the plight of the host city and it's
residents after a once in a century flood
put much of downtown Nashville, it's
suburbs, and a great deal of Tennessee
under water earlier this month. The waters
have receded, but lots of damage remains in
the aftermath. Yet despite being located
adjacent to the Cumberland River,
LP Field was
in good shape for the hot rods some
three weeks later, and Goodguys
partnered with '
Hands On
Nashville' throughout the
weekend to help provide some relief. HON
reps were present at the stadium to
solicit contributions from the
attendees, and the Goodguys responded
with a matching donation at the
conclusion of the event. A stand-up
gesture that will no doubt be of help to
those affected by the flooding.
So with the water level down, and the
weather warm and sunny, car people made the
pilgrimage to Nashville and enjoyed this
new tradition in our State capitol.
Approximately 2,000 cars descended on the
Titans home this past weekend, and made
this the place to be if you enjoy the old
car hobby. It should be noted that several
MCCC members made the show, as well as
quite a number of Bartlett Cruise-in
regulars. A wise choice, as this is the
type of event that will allow one to see
cars that won't ever be seen locally. There
is a place for almost everything here, but
Goodguys events tend to draw cars built to
the highest standards that our specialized
automotive pastime has ever seen. Hence,
entrants come from far and wide. If you
have never stepped out to a national event
of this scope, do yourself a favor and make
the effort in the future. You won't be
disappointed.
In case you can't tell, I thought the
Nashville Nationals were the Bees Knees....
If I noticed any type of trends among the
post-48 set, it would be that the venerable
55 Chevys, first generation Camaros, and
anybody's long-roof station wagons were
highly popular cars to modify with the
latest tricks and techniques. Of course,
the street rod crowd always produce some
stunning creations, and the timeless 32
Ford is still a favorite pallet for
automotive artisans to ply their trade on.
I had my trusty digital camera at my side
to record at least some of what I saw. Even
though the cars were packed into certain
parts of the facility like sardines, with
sizable crowds of admirers, and hood,
trunks, and doors open aplenty, I still
managed to find some things that might be
worth having a second look at. You can

See you at the next hot rod hoedown...
