The car show and cruising season is
currently ramped up for action now that
it's mostly warm outside. Although spring
time has been a little reluctant to arrive
on schedule, the car show calendar just
couldn't wait any longer. April brought a
slate of choice events to sample, and May
provides a full dance card as well.
This roller skate style hot rod was
recently spied on an unseasonably cool
evening in Cordova. It begs the long
standing question... How low can you go?
It was seriously channeled with a "Z'd"
frame and was literally on the ground.
Hint: An air bagged suspension can enhance
the power parking profile of a hot rod to a
previously unbelievable lack of height.
This retro-spec Model A hot rod made it's
appearance at the May Sonic cruise-in on
Germantown Rd. Cruise-ins are held
somewhere in our area every week these
days, and a new monthly event hosted by the
AMCC kicked
off in the Olive Branch Old Towne Sqaure
in April. All of the cruise-ins are
popular events with the MCCC membership,
and they carry the added bonus of being
free.
The
Super Chevy
event at
Memphis Motorsports
Park traditionally says
"open season" to me, and this year was
no different. I know my fellow club
members were on the grounds, but I'm
thinking that fewer MCCC members entered
the car show part of the event this year
than in years past. Still, plenty of
cool cars were on display, along with
drag racing, a swap meet, and a vendor
area. Hard to beat.
This supercharged wheelstanding race car
used to be a 4-door wagon before it was
"altered" into a short wheelbase 2-door
sedan delivery. It gets my vote for the
wildest car at this year's Super Chevy
event.
Speaking of unusual and odd stuff, this
weird looking Vette was spotted just before
I left the track. It seemed strangely
familiar yet I didn't recall seeing
anything quite like it before. It was in
perfect condition, and it finally struck me
that this was a mid 70's version of a
dealer specialty vehicle known as a
"Motion" Corvette from the infamous
Baldwin
Chevrolet delearship of
Long Island New York. They "repurposed"
bunches of Novas, Chevelles, Camaros,
Corvettes, & Vegas, with that extra
"something" during the musclecar years.
This Corvette was probably one of their
last efforts at marketing such vehicles.
Of course, plenty of other Chevys populated
the pits of Memphis Motorsports Park during
Super Chevy, and many of them come from far
and wide to compete in this show. Make time
for this one when it's in town.
Unfortunately, prior commitments prevented
my lens form visiting other spring kick off
events such as the Jackson TN
Bunny
Run, and the Tupelo MS
Blue Suede
Cruise, but many other MCCC
members made the scene and reported good
times in car show land. In fact,
perinial car show participants Danny
& Ginger Ford braved the
unseasonably cool temps at the Bunny
Run, and were rewarded with winning a
drawing for a $750 pressure washer! Not
bad for a $20 entry fee!
MCCC members invaded the Tupelo Blue Suede
Cruise in force on a gorgeous weekend, and
almost walked off with the club
participation award with 10 members in
attendance. We lost out by one member. I
guess I should have attended and brought
another with me, commitments or not! This
event has become an offical big deal with
close to 650 cars entered this year. I've
been before when it was half it's current
size and thought it was great, so it could
only be better with more cars to view.
Also, don't miss the first class
Tupelo Auto
Museum while in town.
Naturally, Chevrolets are of keen interest
to the members of this Chevy club, but one
of the coolest things about these shows is
the variety of cars in attendance.
Most anything with 4 wheels is apt to be
found at these events, and it does a Chevy
fan good to see what other gearheads are
doing these days.
So look over the
Coming Events
Calendar and pick out an
automotive outing to sooth your savage
beast. You'll thank yourself later.
