Hot Rod Power Tour
06/09/07 06:40
Lots of horsepower blew through town this past
Thursday. Memphis was the next to the last stop of
the Hot Rod Magazine Power Tour
for 2007. They started this thing in Cleveland
Ohio, and wound it up in Little Rock Arkansas on
Saturday, June 9th. Apparently, close to 4,000
cars were registered for the drive throughout
the event. How many were still invloved by the
time they hit the bluff city would have to be an
educated guess, but I get the idea that at least
2,000 vehicles were in town this week. It was
mostly a muscle car themed deal, but a
noticeable number of 50's cars, and street rods
were on hand as well.
When they arrived they settled in at Memphis Motorsports Park, and either kicked back or took to the track for some grudge racing. Later, many of the participants visited Beale street in downtown Memphis, and turned the famed street into a nightime cruising spot. Comp Cams and Hot Rod Magazine get credit for arranging the street life party that made a full day of the Memphis leg.
While several MCCC members joined up with the tour in Memphis to drive on to Arkansas, Gerald Raymer deserves some kind of unoffical pat on the back for treking all the way to Cleveland for the start, and sticking with the whole deal until it was done and over with in Little Rock. Gerald left his 66 Chevelle SS at home this time, and brought his Camaro Brickyard 400 pace car out for this trip.
Also seen in Power Tour mode was Larry Chambers' 1957 Chevy hardtop in it's yesteryear Jr. Stock dress. I'll have to ask Larry if he reunited the "Chomper" with the dragstrip since track time was readily available.
Danny Ford was ready to hit the trail in his sano 57 as well...
I also snagged real digital photogrphic evidence of Hot Rod Magazine editor-in-chief David Freiburger snagging real digital photographic evidence of the righteous cars on Beale street in the evening hours. It would probably a good idea to keep an eye out for Hot Rod coverage of the Power Tour in a not too distant future issue.
Additional photos from the Power Tour can be seen here in our Photo Gallery.
